Doncaster's bid to become a City has failed after it was
announced that Chelmsford was to become an official city to mark
the Queen's Diamond Jubilee this year.
The City Bid was launched by Doncaster Council last year and had
the backing of businesses and the public alike.
Doncaster was one of 26 towns to officially apply for city
status and Chelmsford was eventually selected and announced
yesterday.
It was highly anticpated that city status would have provided a
signifcant boost to the local economy in Doncaster, with plans for
increased revenue in the Tourism sector.
